Ultrasound Technologist Performs general ultrasound procedures that produce diagnostic images to aid physicians.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Greets the patient, explains the forthcoming test, positions the patient and generally prepares him/her for the examination.
2. Observes the patient during the diagnostic procedure, making note of any symptoms or changes in vital signs and summons medical aid when necessary.
3. Operates equipment ensuring patient safety and producing the best possible images for proper diagnosis.
4. Receives instruction from medical members of the facility in all aspects of his/her work and its theoretical and clinical basis.
5. Is expected to further his/her knowledge and competence by reading, attending courses and conferences and obtaining CME credits.
SPECIFIC DUTIES A) Imaging procedures
1. Answers general questions from staff, patients and physicians’ offices.
2. Receives patients and explains the procedure to them in order to obtain co-operation and relieve anxieties during the performance of the procedure.
3. Maintains good communication with the patient answers questions without overstepping professional boundaries and listens to patients’ comments.
4. Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
5. Instructs or aids the patient onto the examination table safely and explains, as necessary, positioning, operating characteristics of the equipment, time to complete the examination, etc.
6. Performs special positioning or examination techniques, certain technicalities of additional views when necessary or as requested by the patient’s physician.
7. Checks the quality of the scans in general and is responsible for the quality control of the work performed so that high standards of ultrasound scanning are maintained.
8. Maintains work areas in clean and orderly condition and ensures the examination rooms are properly supplied, equipped and operational before each examination.
B) Patient Preparation and Procedure
1. Checks the requisition for pertinent data
2. Obtains history of patient to ensure proper preparation before examination.
3. Assembles technical data for reporting.
