Job Description
Communications Director

Turn Forward — a national nonprofit dedicated to advancing an ambitious vision for American offshore wind power — is seeking a Communications Director. The Communications Director will  develop and lead Turn Forward’s robust, comprehensive national communications strategy.

The Communications Director will join our team during a critical time. With an upcoming election that could significantly shift the political landscape, your communications expertise and strategic vision for influencing public discourse will be instrumental in advancing our initiatives and our mission. This is a unique opportunity to make a profound impact at a crucial time in our nation’s offshore wind story.

This position is a full time, work-from-home hire, with a preferred location in the Washington, D.C. area to facilitate in-person collaboration. Turn Forward’s other team members are located throughout the United States. Candidates who are BIPOC, women, and LGBTQIA+ are warmly encouraged to apply.

About Us
Created in 2022, Turn Forward is dedicated to advancing an ambitious vision for American offshore wind power that meets today's climate, economic, equity, and environmental challenges. New offshore wind projects are being constructed, and a fleet of projects are preparing to start building. While states and the federal government are advancing bold plans to spur the sector, economic challenges and anti-clean energy opposition facing the industry continue to intensify. At this fast-paced and pivotal moment, Turn Forward is hard at work to ensure the benefits of this resource are broadly known while also working to advance the policies and projects that will significantly expand offshore wind generation, deliver benefits to workers and communities, and protect marine and coastal resources. We are a philanthropy-funded, national organization working collaboratively with climate change, labor, community, and conservation organizations and other cross-sector allies to ensure a successful trajectory for offshore wind development in the U.S.

We are an independent operating project of the umbrella organization, Multiplier, a nationally recognized nonprofit with a growing portfolio of innovative initiatives that conserve and protect a sustainable and resilient world (www.multiplier.org).

Position Summary
The Communications Director leads Turn Forward’s communications efforts and campaigns to build durable, bipartisan public support for offshore wind energy. This position plays a key leadership role in our efforts to showcase offshore wind energy and advance policies and actions that can maximize offshore wind deployment, benefits for communities and workers, and protections for marine and coastal resources. The role will work closely with the Senior Director of Strategy and Advocacy, alongside other team members and best-in-class consultants, and will report to Turn Forward’s Head of Team Impact and Operations.

Specifically, this position will work collaboratively with a range of partners to elevate strategic and targeted positive messages, rapidly tackle misinformation and partisan attacks, and mobilize a growing, diverse range of offshore wind supporters. This position will produce and distribute actionable resources for the offshore wind advocacy network, including data to pinpoint our most powerful messages and audiences; messaging guidance and content for partners to easily and consistently bring those insights to life; and a well-resourced, multi-channel communications strategy deployed at the national level and in key priority geographies where the needs and opportunities are highest.

The Ideal Candidate
You are a passionate and effective communicator and an advocate for clean energy. You enjoy innovating and leading successful communications that bring together players from across sectors. You are versatile, tenacious, collaborative, action-oriented, creative, and humble, and have the ability to move confidently through uncharted waters. You are solutions-oriented and able to create enthusiasm and momentum among your team and external partners to efficiently implement overarching goals and objectives. You are a strong, supportive, and entrepreneurial leader who feels “at home” in a lean start-up environment where you wear many hats while comfortably navigating within larger institutional and coalition structures.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Work directly with the Senior Director of Strategy and Advocacy and across the full team, as well as with external partners and consultants, to develop and lead the vision and implementation of Turn Forward’s complex, national communication strategy, including:
    • collaborating with partners across the country to elevate a positive narrative across traditional and social media platforms;
    • managing development of creative communications content (written, graphic, and video); and
    • leading audience-based campaigns to drive support for offshore wind and support Turn Forward’s policy goals.
  • Lead strategic offshore wind communications activities, including
    • message development and testing;
    • polling;
    • creative content (videos, graphics);
    • paid media campaigns;
    • regular and ad hoc newsletters/briefings; and
    • other tactics to ensure valuable, timely content for Turn Forward partners and supporters.
  • Direct Turn Forward’s organizational communications and branding, including:
    • developing Turn Forward messages and talking points for a range of audiences;
    • day to day social and traditional media activities (both proactive and rapid response);
    • website expansion and management; and
    • preparation of the Turn Forward team for a range of speaking engagements.
  • Manage Turn Forward’s media engagement in partnership with communications consultants, including:
    • Drafting and editing press statements, memos, op-eds, and other press-facing materials
    • Building and maintaining relationships with national climate and political reporters.
  • Provide day-to-day management of the full internal and external communications team, including the Campaign Coordinator and/or Manager and communications consultants and/or vendors to execute communications efforts across social media, web content, and other owned channels.
  • Represent Turn Forward across a variety of venues, including leading and/or attending key collaborative communications convenings, including with consultants and cross-sector partners (across NGOs, industry, philanthropy)
  • Train and develop other messengers for TF's core messages and strategies.
  • Engage with our advocacy partners to identify and fill communications, information and other data needs for advancing offshore wind campaigns at the national, state, and local level.
  • Attend and present at relevant coalition convenings, conferences, webinars, panels, and other opportunities to showcase Turn Forward’s offshore wind communications and leadership.
  • Support Turn Forward's organizational priorities, including contributing to grant proposal and report development.
