Job Description

We are seeking anAssociate Director of Global Educationwho will oversee the student experience, learning, and support for undergraduate education abroad, adhering to best practices in the field. With in-depth knowledge of the JHU curriculum in WSE and KSAS, the Associate Director works closely with undergraduate students to help them integrate their overseas studies into major and minor fields and to ensure that their international program is compatible with their intellectual interests, academic strengths, career, and personal goals. In collaboration with faculty, the Associate Director organizes and executes activities related to degree programs, such as short-term faculty-led programs, information sessions, and integrative learning workshops. The Associate Director plays a vital role in fostering productive relationships with other offices, departments, and schools at Johns Hopkins University.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide oversight of all aspects of credit-bearing study abroad programs for undergraduate students in the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences (KSAS) and Whiting School of Engineering (WSE).
  • Provide academic advising to students for participation in Hopkins-Departmental study abroad programs; including exchange programs, consortium programs, and Hopkins-managed overseas programs as well as approved study abroad programs managed by third-party providers and other universities with a specialization in the science and health fields.
  • Collaborate with faculty in the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences and Whiting School of Engineering on the development and administration of academic programs for semester, summer, and intersession courses abroad.
  • Recruit, advise, select, and prepare students for study abroad on approved outbound international programs and a selection of short-term faculty-led programs.
  • Build and maintain professional relationships with key academic advisors, faculty, and other units within Hopkins to facilitate advising and academic support of students abroad.
  • Develop and oversee a strategic plan for student success in study abroad with a focus on mental health, risk mitigation, conduct, and academic preparation.
  • Provide guidance on international health and travel safety, risk management, and crisis response.
  • Conduct assessment of assigned study abroad programming to ensure quality assurance and alignment with the field's best practices, conducting site visits and other forms of review as necessary.
  • Oversee, manage, and update study abroad data and risk management system, Terra Dotta, modifying and updating procedures to meet new policies and technology requirements of partner offices.
  • Supervise a team of study abroad advisors and provide support for their work and professional development.


Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Excellent written, oral interpersonal, and intercultural communication skills.
  • In-depth understanding of the field, scholarship, and practice of study abroad, with a proven track record of successfully implementing best practices.
  • Proven ability to interact effectively with diverse constituents (including students, parents, faculty, staff, overseas partners, and study abroad program providers) in diverse cultural contexts.
  • Proven commitment to enriching the quality and diversity of study abroad experiences and making these experiences accessible to all students.
  • Proven ability to multi-task effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally several times a year.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Terra Dotta.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's Degree required.
  • Seven (7) years academic advising or other related experience.


Preferred Qualifications
  • 10 years related experience preferred.
  • Ph.D. or equivalent degree in a relevant field. Experience working in a large research university or a comparable complex organization.
  • Experience living, teaching, and/or working abroad.
  • Fluency in at least one foreign language.
  • Experience teaching and/or academic advising.
  • Experience with Terra Dotta.
