Service Line Scope

The Hospitalist Services of MWHC will consist of those practices and clinicians primarily engaged in the provision of patient care and services in the inpatient setting. Those areas include the hospitalist service, Skilled Nursing Facility (SNFist) service, and observation services. The management and goals of this service line will align significantly with that of Mary Washington and Stafford Hospitals and will require full partnership with the leadership thereof.

With an emphasis on Clinical Leadership and credibility, the Medical Director Hospitalist will be expected to maintain a representative clinical practice in hospital medicine, covering the range of rounding on or admitting patients within the hospitals on a regular basis. Additionally, the provider will interact with teams and projects aimed at improving operational efficiencies, cost containment, and care delivery that is appropriate and highest quality. The Medical Director Hospitalist will be expected to interact frequently and effectively with hospital clinical leadership, including the Chief Quality Officer, Chief Hospital Administrator, Director of Revenue Cycle, Physician Advisors, and Care Management, while directly reporting to the Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs.

Service Line Medical Director Essential Duties

  • This position is anticipated to be 50% Clinical and 50% Administrative
  • Provide clinical leadership and vision for the hospitalist services within MWHC in the context of the larger community needs while supporting a culture of Ownership and Accountability
  • Promote Mary Washington Healthcare iCare values in all functions and among all providers (physicians and APP's)
  • Promote principles of High Reliability in all practice functions, whether clinical or operational

Clinical Performance

  • Develop clinical quality goals for the providers annually in partnership with the Senior VPMA and other key stakeholders.
  • Partner with the various clinical and operational leaders at MWH and SH to review and reduce care variation and implement protocols and systems designed to promote best medical practices in the most cost-effective manner.
  • Assist with planning and implementation of specific projects aimed at clinical performance metrics such as Patient Experience, HAI/PSI Reduction, and mortality reduction.
  • Maintain peer-review conferences for open evaluation and discussion of cases with adverse outcomes, safety concerns or patient complaints.
  • Promote and support educational activities involving the hospitalist services including the GME program, medical, APP, and nurse student teaching.
  • Lead the Hospital Advisory Council of providers in review of hospitalist activities and clinical projects as well as provider concerns and needs.
  • Provide ongoing services as a clinically active physician in both hospitals of the MWHC system.

Human Resources/Internal Control

  • In all functions, partner with the operational leadership to form a cohesive team at all levels that seamlessly incorporates clinical and business needs.
  • Establish systems of support and mentorship for providers in hospitalist services
  • Supervise the physicians and APP's and establish systems of accountability with regard to productivity, goals, professional performance, and interactions with other Associates or clinicians.
  • Assist Senior Leadership and HR with recruitment and on-boarding of qualified new providers, including participation as appropriate in interviewing, orienting, and training.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all interventions related to provider and Associate issues.

Compliance/External Control

  • Work with the operational leadership, Medical Staff leadership and Regulatory Affairs to ensure all clinical practices and operations are in compliance with all regulatory and licensing agencies.
  • Provide clinical/medical expertise in interactions with vendors and other external customers.

Financial Management

  • Work with the operational leadership to collaborate with providers around the budget and financial performance of the hospitalist services, providing guidance regarding clinical needs.
  • Collaborate with revenue cycle and finance to ensure all billing and coding is appropriate and accurate.

Required Qualifications

  • Completion of a medical degree (MD/DO) and residency and/or fellowship training in a primarily inpatient-based specialty from an AMA-approved program or other institution approved by the Medical Staff and Board of MWHC.
  • Certification by an American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) board in the physician's primary specialty.
  • At least 2-5 years of experience in leadership or administrative positions in healthcare, with in-depth knowledge of the healthcare industry including finance, legislative policy, economics, service delivery, and trends in the insurance and consumer markets.
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills with an ability to engage constructively with a diverse set of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to recognize the complex needs of multiple customers and proactively recognize and address those needs.
  • At least 2-3 years of experience with an integrated electronic medical record.
  • Graduate education in health policy and management, business administration, or other similar program considered strongly beneficial.
  • Licensed to practice medicine in the State of Virginia required.
  • Active DEA License required.
  • AHA BLS and ACLS Provider CPR required.
  • Must be eligible for participation in Medicare, Medicaid, and third-party insurances.
  • Authorized to work in the United States
