Senior Construction Materials Engineering Technician

S&ME is seeking a Senior Construction Materials Engineering Technician to join our Construction Services team in Columbus, Ohio to lead our project teams and play a vital role ensuring construction projects adhere to industry standards and specifications making a real impact on the local infrastructure.


As a Senior Construction Materials Engineering Technician, your responsibilities encompass a range of tasks from reviewing plans to conducting special inspections, all aimed at guaranteeing the quality and integrity of infrastructure projects. Communication, leadership, and technical proficiency are key as you coordinate with various stakeholders and mentor junior staff. Despite the challenges of outdoor work and project variations, the satisfaction of contributing to successful constructions makes this role both rewarding and impactful.


Your Day-to-Day:

  • Conducting reviews of plans and specifications: Your keen eye for detail will be crucial in preparing for on-site field observations. Your expertise ensures that every aspect of the project aligns seamlessly with the blueprints.

  • Thorough documentation of field activities and observations: Your documentation skills will serve as the backbone of our project records. Your attention to detail ensures that every crucial detail is accurately recorded, providing invaluable insights for project progression.

  • Daily use of Metafield: You'll utilize this software and other laboratory information management systems to submit your detailed reports and accurate testing results.

  • Precision calibration of equipment to industry standards: Your commitment to excellence shines as you ensure that all field and laboratory equipment meets and exceeds industry codes and standards. Your expertise guarantees the reliability and accuracy of our testing processes.

  • Conducting Special Inspection observations: Your knowledge of the International Building Code (IBC) positions you as a key player in ensuring regulatory compliance. Your observations provide critical insights, fostering a culture of safety and quality assurance on every project.

  • Maintaining open communication with stakeholders: Your strong interpersonal skills facilitate seamless collaboration with management, contractors, and clients alike. Your ability to convey complex information in a clear and concise manner fosters trust and transparency, driving the success of our projects.


What You Bring:

  • A High School diploma/GED
  • 5+ years experience in construction testing/inspections of soil, concrete, masonry, and/or asphalt materials
  • You have two or more active certification(s):
    • American Concrete Institute (ACI): Field Testing Grade I; Strength Testing Technician; Laboratory Technician
    • NICET: Construction Materials Testing (Asphalt, Concrete, Soils)
    • International Code Council (ICC): Special Inspector (Reinforced Concrete, Masonry, Soils)
    • DOT Certifications in the fields of Aggregate, Density, Asphalt, and Concrete

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

You are willing and able to work outdoors the majority of the time in varying weather conditions, walk over rough and uneven terrain, and stand up to 8-12+ hours a day based on project needs. You should have the ability to routinely lift and carry 40-50lbs, (field/laboratory samples and equipment), and maneuver field equipment safely, such as a loaded wheelbarrow, on uneven ground and around active construction sites.

This position will involve traveling out-of-town (sometimes overnight) for assignments, as needed, and working outside normal business hours.
