Work Environment:

    Location is flexible: NGA offices in Springfield, VA

Responsibilities

The Toponymist role will apply expertise in foreign languages and romanization policies to research and analyze sources containing foreign geographic names information, make policy recommendations for the standardization of foreign geographic names, and populate and monitor their area of interest for administrative, political, and infrastructure changes to maintain professional currency.

Qualifications

Requirements (Required):

  • Bachelor's degree in Geography, foreign language, or related field or US Military Analysis discipline;additional experience can be used as a substitute for education.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in linguistic activities, geospatial analysis, regional expertise, and/or Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
  • Language specialty positions typically require a minimum ILR of 2/2 on the Defense Language Proficiency Test (DLPT) or an equivalent test result from the ALTA language test. Some positions may require higher scores.
  • Ability to work in independently, with little supervision in high-tempo environment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and efficiently, both orally and in writing.

Requirements (Desired):

  • Knowledge of NGA Products and Services such as Maritime and Aeronautical maps and charts, Geographic Names Database (GNDB), imagery and data repositories,
  • Experience using commercial GIS software solutions such as ESRI products (ArcMap, ArcPro), SOCET GXP, QGIS, RemoteView, or similar electronic light table applications.
  • Experience working with QA/QC protocols on geospatial data, labels, data frames, and metadata.
  • Ability to problem solve and work collaboratively in a multinational environment with foreign partners for data transfer, informational meetings, and training sessions.
  • Experience with Python scripting.
  • Current GEOINT Professional Certification-Foundations (GPC-F).
