Overview

HJF is seeking a Scientist I to carry out research projects in collaboration with a research team. The funded research is a focused line of inquiry and will foster professional development as a career oriented researcher.

This position supports neuroscience research activities in Department of Anatomy, Physiology & Genetics. The position is in the McCabe Lab at Uniformed Services University, where the focus in on preclinical modeling of traumatic brain injury in mice. The position is supported by a Department of Defense project to examine the role of neurotransmitter systems (particularly monoamine systems and the acetylcholinergic system) after traumatic brain injury in conjunction with neurodegenerative disease. In addition, the project employs a candidate compound that may ameliorate symptoms from TBI and aging.

Note: This work site requires that non-US Citizen incumbents have lived in the US three out of the past five years.

Responsibilities
    Assists in designing, developing, executing, and implementing scientific research and/or development.
  • Processes and interprets experimental data. Formulates experimental hypotheses and designs experimental protocols.
  • Investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and theories to potential inventions and products.
  • Performs specialized laboratory research utilizing experimental protocols which involves specialized procedures, including experience with mouse handling and husbandry, behavioral experiments.
  • Makes scientific observations, maintains detailed workbooks/documentation, and ensures documentation fulfills generally accepted professional/industry standards.
  • Coordinates and contributes to new grant and funding applications.
  • Prepares written reports and manuscripts for submission to scientific journals.
  • Collects and handles samples and keeps detailed records of experiments.

  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.
  • In coordination with Principal Investigator, provides oversight and guidance to laboratory technicians and graduate students.
Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience studying rodent testing, including drug administration, brain histology, and behavior testing and software.
  • knowledge of appropriate scientific area.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T1/Public Trust background check.

Physical Capabilities

  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 10 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.

Education and Experience

  • Doctorate Degree required.
  • Minimum of 2-5 years experience required.
