Job Description

The Department of Medicine is seeking a Lead Patient Service Coordinator/Medical Assistant.This position assists with ensuring efficient clinical operations and high-quality care to patients of an outpatient multi-specialty clinical practice. Includes Lead responsibilities such as: maintaining huddle board, assigning rooms, assigning lunch breaks, covering hours as needed.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • As a Medical Assistant assist with measuring vital signs, assisting during physical examinations, completing medical workup, administering and properly update all immunizations and perform phlebotomy services as needed with appropriate documentation in the electronic patient record.
  • Cross-cover as Patient Service Coordinator to assist with registering patients for clinical appointments using computerized database, documenting insurance, collection of copayments and scheduling follow-up appointments.
  • Interact with patients, patient families, referring physicians, and third party carriers with regard to patient-related issues.
  • Work as the Lead for others in a team environment.
  • Assist patients, patient families, referring physicians, and third-party carriers to resolve patient related issues.
  • Schedule patients for lab tests, medical examinations, and consultations.
  • Relay information to patients regarding preparation for lab tests and examinations.
  • Maintain familiarity with various types of medical insurance to explain these plans.
  • Obtain pre-certifications as required by patients health care insurers or managed care providers.
  • Assist patients or family members with completion of medical insurance forms.
  • Inform patients of costs of care being provided, and guide them to appropriate resources for further information, guidance, or assistance.
  • Arrange or assist in arranging patient transportation.
  • Answer telephone, screen callers, relay messages, and greet visitors.
  • Open, sort, and screen mail.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma/GED and certification/registration as a Medical Assistant (e.g. CMA, AAMA, RMA, AMT, NAHP) required.
  • One year work experience in customer service required.
  • Must have current certification in CPR and certification as a Medical Assistant by an approved national examination agency.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Must maintain MA and CPR certification/registration during duration of employment in this position.

  • Lead or supervisory experience.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
