This opportunity is being offered by National Aerospace Solutions, the team selected by the U.S. Air Force to conduct Test and Operations Sustainment at the Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC), Arnold Air Force Base, Tennessee. AEDC operates more than 55 aerodynamic and propulsion wind tunnels, rocket and turbine engine test cells, space environmental chambers, arc heaters, ballistic ranges and other specialized units located in six states. Many of the complex's test units have capabilities unmatched elsewhere in the United States; some are unique in the world. AEDC is one of three installations which are part of the Air Force Test Center (AFTC), one of six subordinate commands of the Air Force Materiel Command organization and an important national resource.

AEDC's mission is to conduct developmental test and evaluation for the Nation through modeling, simulation, ground, and flight test. Execution of the mission requires a large team of highly qualified and dedicated professionals from multiple technical disciplines to effectively accomplish the objectives of our test customers.

Common Job Duties:
  • Prepare complete engineering drawings or diagrams delineating equipment, engineered systems, structures and plant arrangements with sufficient detail in drawings to guide manufacturers in developing shop drawings and to guide construction in their work.
  • Generate 3-D CAD design models based on information from others
  • Make basic mathematical calculations related to the group's drawing responsibilities
  • Work with engineers and other designers in the overall assignment to coordinate designs
  • Compile, maintain and access job drawing files, records, and drawing controls, as instructed
  • It is a condition of employment to wear company issued PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) in accordance with supervisory direction and company policy.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Drafter/CAD Operator II:
Under general supervision, and according to established standards and procedures, prepares engineering drawings from rough sketches, marked-up prints, or from general engineering and design information. Familiar or recurring work is assigned in general terms. Unfamiliar assignments include information on methods, procedures, sources of information, and precedents to follow. Simple revisions to existing drawings or computer models may be assigned with a verbal explanation of the desired results. More complex revisions are produced from sketches, computer models or specifications that clearly depict the desired product.

Typical assignments in addition to Common Job Duties include:
  • Work under direction of a supervisor or engineer to prepare drawings and plant layouts using Computer Aided Design (CAD).
  • Prepare "as-built" drawings to reflect changes to designated work during construction, operations
  • Develop engineering drawings from information provided verbally, on sketches, or in notes; plans related drawing sequence to convey complete engineering information
  • As assigned, check work of less experienced drafters for accuracy, presentation, and compliance to AEDC drafting standards
Drafter/CAD Operator III:
Independently prepares complete sets of complex drawings or computer models that include multiple views, detail drawings, and assembly drawings. Drawings or models include complex design features that require considerable drafting skill to visualize and portray. The Draft/CAD Operator works from sketches, computer models, and verbal information supplied by an engineer, architect, or designer to determine the most appropriate views, detail drawings, and supplementary information needed to complete assignments. This operator selects required information from computer programs, and internet sites, precedents, manufacturers' catalogs, and technical guides. This operator independently resolves most of the problems encountered. Supervisor or design originator may suggest methods of approach or provide advice on unusually difficult problems.

Typical assignments in addition to Common Job Duties and those under Drafter/CAD Operator II include:
  • Prepare bulk material quantity takeoffs and material requisitions for materials applicable to the group
Basic Qualifications for all positions:
  • Vocational school training/certification comprising at least two semesters or at least 9 semester hours of college with courses relevant to drafting and/or design
  • United States Citizenship is required.
In addition to the basic qualifications:
  • Drafter/CAD Operator II Minimum Qualifications: A minimum of two (2) years of extensive drawing and drafting experience Additional relevant education may be substituted for required experience
  • Drafter/CAD Operator III Minimum Qualifications: A minimum of four (4) years of progressive and relevant drafting experience or any combination of education/training and progressive and relevant experience
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with Autodesk software, particularly AutoCAD, Inventor, Plant 3D
  • Sound knowledge of CAD design and drafting techniques, engineering drawing, graphic arts, reading of drawings and reproduction methods used by the group
  • Experience with ASME Y14.5 GD&T
  • Basic computer skills such as use of Microsoft Office products, file naming, and computer folder structures
  • Skill in reading, interpreting and using related documents and drawings prepared by other project groups
  • Skill in mentoring less experienced designers and/or drafters
  • Experience with AEDC design practices and processes
  • Experience with 3D modeling software
  • Current or prior Department of Defense Security Clearance
