Job Description

The Alaka`ina Foundation Family of Companies (FOCs) is looking for a qualified Veterinary Technical Lead - Behavior Management to support our contract with the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) at Fort Detrick, Maryland.

DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Shall serve as technical lead - behavior management and shall coordinate technical support in performing daily behavioral and enrichment work assignments.
  • Provide technical support and participate fully in all aspects of nonhuman primate social housing and enrichment as well as small animal enrichment programs.
  • Pass on to other workers instructions received from supervisor
  • Serve as behavior subject matter expert and provide behavioral technical support to include training on proper work methods and initiating behavioral technial suport.
  • Ensure that needed equipment and supplies are available, and that needed stock is obtained from various supply locations.
  • Perform tasks along with other employees and set pace performing non-supervisory behavioral work
  • Operate medical and research equipment
  • Check in progress and complete work for compliance with procedures and methods, report observations to TPOC or Branch Chief
  • Assist in reviewing and modifying behavioral and enrichment SOPs
  • Review behavioral and enrichment schedules and other technical documents and plans, based on scientific data and veterinarian direction; provide daily oversight with coordination from TPOC of section.
  • Provide information on status of work, cause of delays, overall work operations, and problems and potential corrective actions.
  • Apply practical knowledge and expertise with animal behavioral health care technical skills in resolving technical problems real-time in non-containment.
  • Synchronize behavioral and enrichment work with colony management, husbandry and research support operations, plan the work and identify necessary supplies utilizing animal protocols, SOPs and other guidance information as available.
  • Coordinate weekly food enrichment requests from muliple sections.
  • Pair macaques adn when possible other nonhuman primate species.
  • Conduct behavior assessments, to include but is not limited to, assessing nonhuman primate pair stabiltiy, detailed nonhuman primate assessments, and rabbit assessments as required.
  • Perform Behavior and Enrichment in execution of NHP environmental enrichment programs that ocmply with the Animal Welfare Regulations and The Guide.
  • Work independently in handling and performing behavioral and enrichment procedures for Old and New World NHP's, Ferrets, Rabbits, Pigs and Rodents.
  • Responsible for logistical tasks such as receipt, storage and maintenance of inventories, an accounting for all logistical supplies, and reporting discrepancies of receipt immediately.
  • Provide training relative to animal behavior management and enrichment.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

REQUIRED DEGREE/EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:

  • HS Diploma
  • LAT certification or higher level of certification, as defined by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS), is required prior to or within six (6) months starting work on this Task Order.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum three (3) years in a research setting, of technical experience with nonhuman primate social housing (Macaques preferred),
  • Proficient in pairing Macaques in a research setting
  • Proficient in assessing pair stability
  • Proficient in performing detailed nonhuman primate behavior assessments.
  • Experience in animal technical care and support for Macaques and African Green monkeys
  • Experience with Good Laboratory Practice experience is required.

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience in social housing for Marmosets
  • Experience in behavioral management for Rabbits and Rodents in a research setting.

REQUIRED CITIZENSHIP AND CLEARANCE:

A favorable National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI) will be required.
