General Summary of Position
Supervises the Sterile Processing team, performs specific sterile processing functions for the operating room and other patient care units as deemed operationally necessary following approved infection control, quality assurance and departmental policies and procedures.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervision and Support: Oversees the daily operations of Sterile Processing. Develops daily schedules of duties Develops work schedules and posts in a timely manner. Maintains department manuals in an orderly fashion. Maintains all records according to departmental, state and federal regulations. Participates in performance improvement activities and maintains all relevant documents Assures environment is maintained as per AAMI/IAHCS Standards Completes and authorizes Kronos for payroll purposes Orders supplies as needed through Lawson Interviews, trains, coaches and manages employees, with assistance from OR manager as needed. Assists with gathering information needed for budget process.
  • Clinical/Technical: Performs sterile processing functions. Sterilizes general, operating room instrumentation, tray sets, and scope equipment by means of steam, gas, or chemical sterilization. Picks up, manually, cleans to remove gross soil, and decontaminates general operating room instrumentations, tray sets and scope equipment per departmental procedure. Sort and process instrumentation through washer/sterilization and/or sonic equipment in the designated decontamination area. Manually cleans and disinfects select patient care equipment. Cleans and sterilizes loaner instrumentation as required to department policy procedure. Cleans supply carts and operational equipment including ultrasonic cleaner, washer sterilizer, steam and sterilizers and sterrad autoclave racks as required by departmental policy and procedures.
  • Coordination: Coordinates and maintains instruments and supplies according to department standards. Inspects and assembles general operating room instrumentation, tray sets, and scope equipment using appropriate packaging and wrapping techniques. Responsible for preparing and delivering complete case carts including add on case carts according to departmental standards to the Operating Room. Restocks supply carts in designated areas utilizing inventory control methods. Documents all cleaning activities in designated cleaning records. Returns clean patient care equipment to staging area. Records and maintains accurate daily records of all sterilization functions according to regulatory agencies and quality assurance standards. All cleaning and processing must comply with departmental procedures, infection control guidelines, surgeons specifications and manufacture's recommendations.
  • Development: Maintains current knowledge, certification, and licensure. Identifies learning needs in self and initiates actions to address these education needs. Attends continuing education programs. Attends hospital sponsored training programs as required by the department. Meets all mandatory obligations.

  • Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • High School Diploma or GED required or
    • equivalent required and
    • Completion of accredited surgical tech program preferred

    Experience

    • 3-4 years Experience in sterile processing required or
    • Equivalent background. required
    • 1-2 years Leadership experience preferred

    Licenses and Certifications

    • Certification as Central Service Technician required

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend English.
    • Basic Computer skills to perform Data entry in computerized clinical information systems
    • HIPAA policies on Confidentiality
