General Summary of Position
The Central Sterile Supply Technician III performs under direct supervision all the functions expected of the Central Sterile Supply Technician I and II. They assist in orientation of new employees to each work assignment area and overall department operation. They will serve as a resource person for all the following functions: decontamination, prep and packaging and sterilization of all surgical trays and unit procedure trays. The Central Sterile Supply Technician III possesses a high level of familiarity with surgical instrument technology including preventative maintenance procedures, functionality, cleaning standards and distribution functions as it relates to case carts, exchange carts, par level carts and inventory control. The Central Sterile Supply Technician III ensures that the items being prepared for sterilization are clean, function properly, and are in good repair. They have the ability to differentiate between steam and low temperature sterilized supplies. They must package supplies according to the manufacturer's specifications. The Central Sterile Supply Technician III assumes the lead role for the unit or department functional areas (e.g. surgical specialty - Orthopedics) and identifies, receives approval for, and maintains department specific goals (e.g. monitoring Sterilization Records for accuracy) in the absence of the Lead Central Sterile Supply Technician.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs quality control methods as required by the standards set by AAMI, AORN, and the Joint Commission on all sterilizers, including biological, chemical, and mechanical monitoring.
  • Operate and maintain washer/sterilizer, steam spray gun, ultrasonic machine, steam and low temperature sterilizers, heat sealers and any additional required equipment and machinery.
  • Understands the principles of electrical and mechanic safety and working with the bio-medical engineering department to ensure safe and properly functioning equipment.
  • Practice preventative maintenance on all instruments and patient care equipment.
  • Dispense sterile supplies to the appropriate location in the OR, ER, L&D and other units making sure they are in dust covers and have been rotated to assure proper sterility guidelines.
  • Remains alert to instrument and equipment safety hazards to prevent malfunction during use. Inspects instruments prior to tray assembly. Removes dull or malfunctioning instruments from service and replace them as necessary.
  • Maintain accurate instrument count using the appropriate count sheet of all surgical sets to be assembled. Inform supervisor of any discrepancies.
  • Maintains proficiency in the decontamination, prepping, packaging and sterilization of instruments.
  • Maintains patient equipment through the use of proper cleaning and decontamination techniques.
  • Handles instruments and equipment correctly to ensure safety and proper functionality.
  • Conducts daily biological monitoring and operation of sterilizer and accurately records results.
  • Acts as a preceptor for new team members.
  • Wears appropriate scrub attire, cover coat, hair coverings and masks in designated areas.
  • Maintains authorized traffic patterns in Central Sterile.
  • Assists in inventory, care and distribution of supplies. Maintains par levels in quantities sufficient to ensure availability.
  • Assists in storing and stocking supplies. Is aware of where supplies are housed and is able to retrieve them quickly and efficiently upon request.
  • Responds appropriately in any urgent or emergency situation and reports problems and potential solution regarding patients, visitors and team members to the Manager of Central Sterile.
  • Ensures that the environment of care is maintained according to regulatory guidelines.
  • Prioritizes and completes assignments within scheduled hours of work to meet departmental needs.
  • Serves on committees, task forces, process action teams, public relations activities or work groups on a voluntary and/or appointed basis at the division or hospital level.

  • Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • High School Diploma or GED required

    Experience

    • 3-4 years Experience as a central sterile supply technician II required

    Licenses and Certifications

    • Current certification as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) required and
    • Current Certification as a Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS) required

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Ability to comprehend and follow the policies and procedures for MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center.
    • Ability to read, write and speak or communicate in English to successfully accomplish the essential duties of the position.

    • Must have a thorough knowledge of aseptic techniques and procedures, sterilization techniques and procedures, infection control and work flow principles and requirements, equipment and supply processing; demonstrates and exercises responsible judgment to provide necessary supplies and equipment for patient care.
    • Demonstrates compliance with patient safety and risk management protocols.
    • Demonstrates self-directed learning initiatives and seeks ways to maintain current competency and respond to new clinical opportunities.
    • Develops and promotes a commitment to service excellence within the work area by communicating with team members in a courteous and respectful manner and by demonstrating the ability to work in an environment of cooperation and collaboration.
