Nursing students slated to graduate in 2024 are encouraged to apply now for our Winter Student Nurse Extern Mini-Cohort

As a Nurse Extern, you will work alongside an RN mentor and care team, providing holistic and quality care to our patients.  You will be paired with your RN mentor for at least 50% of your clinical time - receiving coaching, hands-on learning, and assimilation into the practice environment.  Your assigned RN mentor will help you develop critical thinking skills needed to increase your confidence as a nursing professional.  In addition, you will be supported by a nursing professional development specialist to ensure learning needs are met as you gain the best clinical experience possible. 

Student Nurse Extern roles will be available at all four of our Baltimore MedStar Hospitals- including:  Franklin Square Medical Center, Good Samaritan Hospital, Harbor Hospital, and Union Memorial Hospital.  A variety of units and specialties will be offered. (Not all specialties will have opportunities) This is an excellent way to build a relationship on the unit where you would like to start your career as a new to practice nurse!  


** You must be graduating from your RN nursing program in 2024 in order to meet the requirements of this position.

                  
Cohort start date:  To be finalized for late December 2023 or early January 2024 / Will align with winter break.

Required Commitment:  During the winter break, you will work 36 to 40 hours per week for a "mini-cohort".  This may be 4 to 6 weeks, depending on your school schedule.  Once your classes begin for the spring semester, you will transition to working flexible per diem shifts (16 hours bi-weekly) leading up to graduation. 

Your schedule will include educational sessions for additional learning opportunity.

Hours: Shifts vary from 8 to 12 hours 

Pay:   $20.12 per hour

Education/Training: Active enrollment as a senior nursing student (or entering senior year) in an RN program; Official transcripts will be required at time of hire and at the end of each semester in order to validate active enrollment.

Experience: No clinical experience outside of nursing school experience required

License/Certification: CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) certification by the Maryland Board of Nursing is required; BLS (CPR for Healthcare Providers) certification.
