Job Description
The Director of the Occupational Safety and Health Office is responsible for the overall operation, programs and activities related to occupational safety and health that impact and are relevant to UFCW-represented industries and workers. The OSH Office contributes to the growth of the International Union through collaborative work with UFCW divisions and departments by integrating workplace safety and health into work done by these Divisions and Departments, as well as strategizing with them to further their goals and those of the International Union. The Office assists in the development of policies and promulgation of regulations relevant to UFCW industries and growth and works with OSHA and other government agencies to accomplish this.  The OSH Office provides training, education, and technical assistance for International Union staff, organizers, Local Union officers and staff and Local Union stewards and activists.   The Director directs and supervises office staff, as well as manages the budget of the Office.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
  • Directs and supervises activities of staff in the Occupational Safety and Health Office, including reviewing and prioritizing requests for assistance and training from Regions and Local Unions.
  • Provides technical assistance to the Food Processing, Packing and Manufacturing Division, Retail, Cannabis, Organizing and other Departments and Divisions and to Local Unions to identify and control safety and health issues in these industries. Directs and supervises staff in these activities.
  • Oversees and participates in educational activities conducted by OSH Office.  Specific educational activities can include preparation and writing of educational materials, developing safety and health curricula, and conducting training and education classes.
  • Assists in labor-management safety and health negotiations and JLM committee meetings involving health and safety-related issues.
  • Supports Organizing Department in occupational safety and health activities, including directing OSH staff participating in organizing activities.
  • Monitors key developments and represents the UFCW in meetings with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), NIOSH, EPA, USDA, and other government agencies, both state and federal, that affect UFCW membership.
  • Works with the Legislative and Political Action Department to write and submit comments on proposed occupational safety and health rules, regulations, and standards, as well as providing expert testimony and preparing Local Unions and members to testify on safety and health matters before Congress, Department of Labor, or other relevant governmental agencies.     
  • Works with the Legal Department to represent Local Unions at settlement negotiations of OSHA citations.
  • Works with the Communications Department to write articles on health and safety and recommends topics for the UFCW International’s communications platforms.
  • Presents at conferences and meetings, at both International and Local Union levels, and meets with other labor unions and outside constituency/worker advocacy groups on occupational safety and health.
  • Directs research into health and safety issues facing membership.  Stays abreast of related food and environmental safety issues.

Qualifications and Experience
  • Minimum ten years’ experience in the field of occupational safety and health.  Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health or Public Health or related field required.  Advanced degree is preferable but not required.
  • Minimum 7 years’ experience working with labor organizations and/or worker advocacy organizations promoting worker health and safety.
  • Training and adult education experience with union members/workers.
  • Advanced knowledge of and experience working with constituency groups, and relevant government agencies, both state and federal, including OSHA and NIOSH.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills are required, including public speaking.
  • Excellent organizational skills are required. 
  • Experience in curriculum and materials development.
  • Must have the ability to work independently, as well as develop relationships and make independent judgments.
  • Demonstrated ability to direct and manage staff.
