Job Description
Overview:
The 1.3 million members United Food Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW), a powerful voice for working men and women is seeking a Deputy Political Director (Field Director) to develop and deliver the department’s local union training and field programs related to political activism. Conducts and provides research and analysis on political landscape and candidates running for office. This position requires the exercise of discretion.  This position is based in Erlanger, Kentucky.
 
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Designs, implements and reviews field programs both in-region and nationally, at the direction of Political Director, for ballot measure, candidate, and other campaigns as assigned. This may include overseeing field staff, in addition to canvassing, worksite activities, phone banking, and providing general campaign office support.
  • Works with senior staff to help develop the UFCW's strategic political plan that includes electoral, ABC and legislative goals.
  • Provides basic analysis on multiple state legislative proposals and reports findings to designated staff to use in recommending organizational support or opposition based on the impact on UFCW members, wages and working conditions, industries, families, and communities.
  • Creates and implements internal regulatory culture for uniformity in field programs across all region including reporting, field plan templates, and tracking.
  • Assists Political Director in management of national lost timer programs during electoral cycles. Acts as senior field representative for UFCW political field programs and special projects.
  • Supports field programs to increase Active Ballot Club participation and local political activism in coordination with region offices. Works with Deputy Political Director (PAC) overseeing ABC Program to build out plans with political coordinators to increase ABC participations.
  • Collaborates with senior staff to encourage local unions to lobby on legislative issues of concern to UFCW.
  • Regularly coordinates work priorities with Political Director.
  • Works with Political Director to develop appropriate political reports.
  • Coordinates with region offices, political coordinators and local unions to recruit activists to support UFCW program goals and objectives.
  • Works with senior staff to develop relationships with allies in support of program goals and objectives. Assists in integrating legislative and political programs.
  • Extensive travel and long/irregular hours required. Relocation may be necessary. Long term deployment for legislative and/or political campaigns.
Qualifications:
Campaign management experience, at least six years with a membership organization. Experience in using Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint is required. Experience using Van is required.  Strong writing skills are required.  Strong oral presentations skills are required.  Must be able to learn to make effective oral presentations to groups or individuals.  Fluent in Spanish and English is a plus.
 
Must have an understanding of Federal Election Commission (FEC) law, regulations concerning Political Action Committees (PAC), and their interaction with state election and financial disclosure law.  Must be able to quickly learn their interaction with the labor movement. Ability to work independently and take initiative. Must be able to use discretion, handle sensitive situations and recognize when to refer to a higher level.
 
Must have the ability to do advance information gathering and analysis.  Must be organized and responsive to deadlines.  Must be able to complete projects on multiple timelines. Must be able to field and respond quickly to requests for information from union officers or representatives. Strong interpersonal skills.
