Job Description

ICMA, International City/County Manager Association has several positions open in the marketing field. All candidates should have an interest in being part of an organization that focuses on how local governments build better communities. Candidates should possess a firm understanding of membership based marketing with experience in social media, digital marketing and project management.   Desirable candidates should have excellent communications skills, ability to prioritize projects and meet established deadlines. A positive and collaborative attitude and the ability to move projects and ideas forward are essential.

You will explores new product feasibility and suitability, providing recommendations to the publishing director and others. You will engages editors, authors, and presenters and guide them in planning scope and coverage of agreed-upon content, preparing outlines, writing text, and enlisting and managing the work of others as appropriate. You will reviews editor, author, and presenter submissions for substance and adherence to plan. You will performs substantive edit on short publishing pieces and oversees quality of freelanced substantive editing on longer pieces. You will provides “unique value proposition” to marketing team and advises on marketing copy.

MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Develops (plans for, solicits, and edits and/or rewrites) content for

  • ICMA revenue-based publications, including textbooks, practitioner books, special reports, subscription-based reports, and training materials, in print and other media
  • ICMA webinars
  • ICMA Knowledge Network  and New, as yet undetermined formats
  • Assists publishing director in development of strategic plans and publishing and webinar priorities; ensures alignment of content development with association topic priorities.
  • Consults with local government managers, department heads, professors, trainers, ICMA staff and partners, and others to research current needs for publications and related products; evaluates existing products for revision or reissue; makes product recommendations accordingly.
  • Locates, selects, and engages subject-matter experts to serve as editors, authors, Knowledge Network experts, and webinar presenters. Drafts letters of agreement. Creates preliminary schedule benchmarks, with expected completion dates.
  • Project manages webinar series, from initial planning stages to final assessment. This includes:
    • Identifying topic and speakers and confirming dates and description of each event
    • Coordinating with marketing team and ICMA’s webinar platform provider
    • Work with Customer Service Center to ensure registrations are documented and attendance and revenue reports generated
    • Guiding presenters so that they create program outline and PowerPoint
    • Conducting prep session with speakers and ICMA’s platform provider
    • Conduct the live event and facilitate the Q&A portion
    • Create evaluations for each event and share and document results.
  • Provides style guidelines and guidance to editors and authors. Ensures that final content is complete, on plan, substantively sound, and appropriately illustrated and appended.
  • Reviews solicited and unsolicited proposals and lines up other proposal reviewers who have relevant expertise.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with national, state, city, and county organizations for the purpose of developing new content, locating content experts, and developing joint projects as appropriate.
  • Develops and maintains an expanding network of authors, editors, and advisors.
  • In conjunction with publishing director, develops and administers webinar budget.
  • In preparation for go/no-go decisions regarding new publications, prepares the background material, including a financial analysis (using an established template).
  • Performs substantive edit or oversees substantive editing on editorial pieces.
  • Works in conjunction with marketing manager and director of publishing on product designs and formats.
  • Prepares “unique positioning statement” for marketing manager (as part of decision-making preparation).
  • Coordinates meetings and work of the ICMA Press Editorial Advisory Board and the Advisory Board on Graduate Education.
  • Performs other job-related duties as required.

Level of Contacts:

Contacts are with managers, supervisors, and technical staff in offices within the organization or in other associations; members; professors and trainers; consultants and other experts who work with local government; the public; and state and local governments.  Contacts take place in phone calls, e-mail correspondence, conferences, and meetings scheduled at the request of one of the participants.

Education and Experience:


 

  • Degree in English, Public Administration, or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Six years’ publishing experience, including making assignments to authors and editors, editing, writing, planning, and developing; exposure to professional or educational publishing.
  • Experience assigning and editing articles, books, and/or web content
  • Knowledge of public administration and local government desirable
  • Demonstrated knowledge of editorial principles, practices, and techniques
  • Demonstrated organizational, interpersonal, priority-setting, and problem-solving skills
  • Skill in providing constructive feedback to writers
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and manage multiple projects
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with ICMA members and staff and outside editors, authors, consultants, and organizations
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment, managing and cultivating relationships with a variety of teams and partners
  • Familiarity with databases and /or association software systems
  • Ability to use or learn to use InCopy in the production of publications
  • Knowledge of and proficiency with Microsoft OfficeWord and Excel
  • Knowledge of Live Meeting programs preferred
