UMUC is a Maryland institution addressing Maryland’s needs

  • In fall 2006, UMUC served 19,827 Maryland residents. In FY 2006, UMUC offered on site, face to face instruction at 21 sites throughout Maryland. Maryland residents represented 59% of UMUC’s FY 2006 stateside course enrollments. In fall 2006, more than 40% of stateside undergraduate students had spent some time at a Maryland community college before coming to UMUC. UMUC has alliances with 11 of the Maryland Community Colleges. In FY 2006, 802 undergraduate degrees in Information Technology (IT) were awarded by UMUC’s stateside programs. UMUC also awarded 346 graduate IT degrees.
UMUC is a global institution

  • In FY 2006, UMUC ’s overseas divisions offered on site classes in 24 countries throughout the world, enrolling 42,879 individual students in undergraduate and graduate programs.
UMUC provides access to higher education for minority students

  • In fall 2006, 32% of UMUC’s stateside students were African-Americans; minority students comprised 43% of the total enrollment – UMUC enrolls more African American students than any of the four individual Maryland HBCU’s.
  • In FY 2006, 31% of students who took at least 1 online class were African-American; minority students made up 42%.
  • In FY 2006, 207 African-American students graduated from UMUC’s stateside undergraduate IT programs.
  • In FY 2006, 30% of all degrees were awarded to African-American students. UMUC provides higher education opportunities to working adults
  • Four out of five undergraduate students enrolled in UMUC’s stateside programs are also working full time.

UMUC is the senior academic institution delivering higher education to our military

  • Currently, UMUC enrolls close to 60,000 active duty military, reserves, dependants and veterans.
  • In addition, in FY 2006, UMUC enrolled over 8,400 active-duty military students through its stateside online and onsite programs.

Programs

The School of Undergraduate Studies offers 26 bachelor's degree programs and 43 undergraduate certificates. Undergraduate students can earn credit through classroom-based and online courses, or through the innovative Cooperative Education and Prior Learning Programs.

The Graduate School offers 20 master's degree programs, 42 graduate certificates, and a Doctor of Management, with most available in both classroom and online formats. In addition, several master's degrees are available in an accelerated Executive format.

The National Leadership Institute (NLI) provides non-credit leadership development programs for managers of all levels. NLI delivers programs online and at the university's Adelphi headquarters, as well as customized on-site programs for organizations nationwide.

The UMUC Arts Program consists of several large collections of artwork, including the Maryland Artists Collection, which are exhibited at the university's Adelphi headquarters and other UMUC locations.

Services

In Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., UMUC offers daytime, evening, and weekend classes at 16 locations. Many sites feature academic advising, computing facilities, and library services.

In Europe, Asia, and in the United States, UMUC delivers undergraduate classes on more than 130 military sites for active-duty service members, government employees, and their families.

UMUC's Career Services is a lifelong career resource for students and alumni, offering career counseling, job search assistance, and career management tools. The center also assists employers with identifying prospective employees.

The Inn and Conference Center at UMUC offers organizations an attractive setting for conferences and meetings, featuring 39 meeting rooms, a 750-seat auditorium, an 8,000-square-foot grand ballroom, a hotel with 237 guestrooms, and a café, lounge, and restaurant.

UMUC’s Master of Distance Education (MDE) program recently received EFMD CEL accreditation, the highest international standard of technology-enhanced learning programs in the field of management education. The awarding body carefully examined the effectiveness of the program’s teaching and learning process and regarded UMUC's MDE program as a “best practice case in academia”.

The university has won many awards for its online programs. Most recently, UMUC was recognized with the 2006 Sloan Consortium (Sloan-C) Excellence in Faculty Development for Online Teaching award. In 2004, UMUC received the highest honor given in Web education: the Sloan-C Award for Excellence in Institution-Wide Asynchronous Learning Network Programming. The university also earned Best Distance Education Course, as determined by the Maryland Distance Learning Association.

A Black Issues in Higher Education listing showed that in fiscal year 2001, UMUC ranked third nationwide in graduating African-Americans with graduate degrees in business, according to an analysis of U.S. Department of Education reports. The category includes all UMUC management degrees, not just the MBA.

UMUC recently received two more prestigious honors: the National Security Agency designated UMUC a Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education for the university's programs in information assurance (internet security) and UMUC's Web site received Forbes magazine's distinction as being "Best of the Web" in distance education.



UMUC is accredited

UMUC Provides a Diversity of Degrees

The university offers bachelor’s degrees with a choice of 26 majors and 36 minors. UMUC’s Graduate School offers 20 master’s degrees and three executive master’s programs, in addition to having one of just a few doctor of management programs in the United States.

UMUC offers more than 600 courses and close to 100 undergraduate and graduate certificate and degree programs completely online via WebTycho, the University's state-of-the-art interactive classroom software. Last year, UMUC counted 143,544 online enrollments.

And, while increasing numbers of students choose the convenience of UMUC’s award-winning online education programs, they also may complete coursework in traditional classrooms at 16 locations throughout Maryland and the metropolitan Washington, D.C. region.
