Company Overview

What We Do:

The BLSYW curriculum emphasizes science, technology, engineering and math; areas in which women are typically underrepresented. In addition to a strong focus on rigor in the classroom, we are passionate about assisting our students in the development of the leader within. We have created an awesome leadership development curriculum, which includes a leadership speaker’s series, a leadership advisory course and a litany of other opportunities that will cultivate the emerging leader.

BLSYW is simply a celebration, a celebration of the girl child; we celebrate her! Her Totality, Her Vitality and Her Reality

Our Mission:

The Baltimore Leadership School for Young Women prepares young women of Baltimore for success in college and life. BLSYW engages students in learning through a strong academic culture and innovative teaching practices essential to the development of the whole young woman—emotionally, physically and scholastically. BLSYW cultivates self confidence, individuality, and a strong sense of community responsibility. Young women of BLSYW demonstrate leadership at every level—self, school and society.

Our Founder:

Brenda Brown Rever Born and raised in Baltimore, she is a graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park, and a product of the Baltimore City Public School System. Ms. Rever is a leader in the philanthropic community and a champion for public and private education, the Jewish community and the empowerment of women. She views this school as an opportunity to develop young women who will be well educated and aware of their strengths in order to participate in life as meaningful Leaders in tomorrow's world.

Our Model:

The Baltimore Leadership School for Young Women is modeled on the highly successful Young Women’s Leadership School of East Harlem (TYWLS). TYWLS opened in 1996 with one class of seventh grade students. The school now serves over 400 students in grades 6-12 and has achieved fantastic results. Over 95% of the students have graduated, and 100% of their graduates have been accepted to college for the past eight years. BLSYW will join an impressive group of affiliate schools in New York City, Philadelphia, Chicago, and across Texas.

Benefits of an All Girls School:

Research has shown that students in single-sex schools are more likely to feel better connected to their schools and are more likely to develop strong relationships with their teachers. Students in single-sex schools are also more likely to pursue academic paths according to their talents and interests rather than particular gender stereotypes.

BLSYW will:

1. Emphasize academics over youth culture values.
2. Expose its students to great role models and professional women.
3. Encourage pursuit of a college education.
4. Ensure that its students engage in leadership activities inside and outside of school.
5. Challenge gender stereotypes in its curriculum and activities.
